So when I go to order a new rack and pinion unit it ask if I have a performance suspension or not. So first how do I figure out which mine has.

Since you have a LSC you have the Sport Steering. 1 3/4 turns lock to lock.

Since I own both a Blass and two LSC's, let me elaborate and answer this question from my personal experience.

The Blass is equipped with a steering rack with a gear ratio that allows three complete turns of the steering wheel full left turn lock to full right turn lock and vice versa. Steering effort and road feel are minimal with this rack. This is considered the standard suspension.

The LSC is equipped with a steering rack with a gear ratio that allows two and a half complete turns of the steering wheel full left turn lock to full right turn lock and vice versa. Steering effort and road feel are greater with this rack. This is considered the performance suspension.

I've got a 1984 Base Model and a 1990 Bill Blass... I recently acquired a lot of parts from a 1988 LSC, including a complete rack and pinon assembly. My question is, will it fit either or both my cars?

I don't believe the LSC rack is compatible with 90 and earlier BB or Base models. It is a different ratio. :)

I don't understand why both types of steering racks should not be interchangeable.
Isn't the ratio be made within the steering rack?

I'm sure you can swap them, the ratio will be the main difference. Later Mustangs can also but those require other part to make them work, plus many of those are made for wider wheel/tires, so their bump stops are going to make turning wider than ever.

Try to find only lower mileage original racks, from Mark VII's. Avoid rebuilt racks if at all possible.

Is the difference in feel between the 2.5 turn performance steering and the 3.0 turn standard steering like night and day?
Since my steering needs some work (worn tie rod ends, inner and outer), I think about installing a whole new steering rack and "upgrade" from 3.0 to 2.5 turn steering rack.

You can use either one, they do swap, the difference is internal. I hope your sources for the rack is better than those here. Most of those 2.5(fast) racks come from Fox 302 Mustangs, the identical rack as used in LSC Mark VII's. Those mid 80's to 1993 Mustangs were almost all abused, so the steering racks also are likely to be worn out. The rebuilds from parts stores all come from cores that came from the Fox chassis cars(Mustang, Mark VII, Thunderbird, Cougar). It's simply random whether the rebuilt units are okay(not worn out too far(excess wear on internal parts, and the housing)). I'm just pointing out that many racks people buy for their Mustangs or Mark VII's etc, seem to develop leaks sooner than what you'd want(10-20 years like original), or are looser in feel than the original units.

Buy what you can if you have to, just pay attention to how it works immediately, and keep nice clean power steering fluid in it.

I'm just curious, if the 2.5 turn performance steering is such a great improvement in comparison to the 3.0 turn standard steering in terms of road feel.

The slower ratio has an easier feel to turn the wheels, a little less effort and more movement of the hands to do the same job. A very fast ratio would be just over 2 turns, say 2.25 turns. I have a 95 Crown Vic that I put a 97 CV steering box into. I didn't know there was a change, but the later box is noticeably quicker to turn. The effort seemed the same to me, I did own two 95 CV's at the time, one with the 97 box in it. I prefer the quicker steering, but you will get used to either one.

My current LSC has an aftermarket rack in it, made for the 94-04 Mustangs(SN95's). It's a very stiff feel, they made it with that built in, the Mustang guys like that for racing. I'd rather it take less effort for my Lincoln, but I got used to it too. The rack and pinions has adjustable features, but it's only made by the builder, using different parts.

Also check with Ford for pricing, I have been pleasantly surprised recently by my parts guy. I can get an Explorer rack for $150ish from Ford, while parts stores want more like $225 for a Cardone rack etc. Watch the core charge too, some are minimal, and some are crazy high. Ford wants $400 for the Explorer core, which means you bring in an old one for sure.

I think so, too, that you can get used to either one.
But I hope to be more pleased with quicker turning. I just really would prefer it that way and I also wouldn't mind more effort, too. To some point I can adjust the required effort with the yoke, right?

I have never adjusted a rack or steering box. I've read of people doing it, but it is a tricky thing to mess with. The range of motion is less on later SN95's also, since those had bigger wheels. So a rack will not swap perfectly onto everything else, but the later rack works well for mine with 94 Cobra wheels(17x8).

8-) FWIW: I have had many of both models Mark VIIs and appreciate the difference between the standard and the LSC. To me it depends on where you do most of your driving, city or highway. I like the 90 and earlier Base and Designer for city where you have more parking maneuvers. The softer suspension also helps with the rougher roads in town. The LSC suspension and steering is better for out of town driving. Of course you can just opt for the 91-92 BillBlass that is set up like an LSC for suspension but I am not positive about the steering rack.

I have been driving the Marks for about 20 years now and have tried just about all the variations available from the diesel to a highly modified 5spd and convertible. There's not much I've missed. What's my favorite you ask......89LSC, but the 90 dark titanium SE is a very close 2nd.
