The 1985 model Mark VII is not good to race with. It is underpowered in the horse power (140hp) area and is very slow.

I would suggest selling your 1985 and picking up a 1988-1992 Mark VII with the HO 5.0L 225hp engine if you would like to race.

It's a great car, but the later engine and management system is much better. That's a fairly big project, so either stay near stock or research the parts needed to upgrade with a full engine/trans rebuild swap. Welcome,

Your 1985 Mark VII is a reliable platform. Many folks prefer them to the later models. Other than the fact that the engine has marginally less power than the 1986 and again more power in 1988, the main weakness is the single roller timing chain which needs to be checked/replaced at somewhere around 150,000 miles if the car was well cared for; sooner if not so well cared for, and the overdrive band in the transmission is somewhat smaller, which in balance, works out because of the lower horsepower/torque.

The power is respectable and it, in balance, is a good driving car with adequate power and good dependability.

If you wish to make it go fast, you may be further ahead to purchase a 1988 or newer model, preferably an LSC, but you have a good dependable car in your 1985 model.

Hope this helps.

it has only 90,000 miles. it had been sitting for 7 years. so i have to check the engine if it runs good. also the master brake box broke. so i was not sure if its worth to rebuild and remodel the car body and inside too. maybe i can add a fuel system whatever it call, to get mpg better. after that i will drive it for my life. in my personal i like old school car or truck. i am only twenty years old. so more advice, guys..?

A twenty year old that asks for advice.....rare....I like it! IMHO you should just complete a thorough check of all the systems and drive it normally. Once you are sure of how it normally performs, you can tweek it a little maybe. I have not had a pre 88 LSC to compare gas mileage, but the BB with the 3.08 or 2.73 got pretty decent highway mpg. Driving around town and in the city with stop and go traffic in our 5.0's will kill mpg in any of them.
