Picked up my long desired Mark VIII and for only 1,000!

Postby murdomino » Mon Mar 03, 2014 11:36 am

And how have i lived so long without it i just dont know. Sad to say guys, if anyone here hasnt driven a Mark VIII, i strongly encourage it. Some reason, the VII i have, just never felt right. Don't get me wrong, i love my fords but even after almost a year, getting it for a steal and it always being reliable, i just never fell for this particular VII. After the first day, i LOVE my Mark VIII. It's faster, more comfortable, and definitely being ten years newer makes a big difference. the driveability factor just cant compare. This car brings my total vehicle count now up to 9. First thing for me now is to do the mustang hub swap so i can put the car on some FR500 rims! pictures to come...

Congrats, and enjoy it. Check out the headlights well, the OEM HID lights can be super high$.

My friend got a 97 last year, and he bought aftermarket parts to fix his. It works well with those parts, he's pleased with it too.

I owned one before I purchased my Markvii. All the things about the running gear are true. It is faster and smoother than the Markvii, and gets better gas mileage. I hated the headlights, they were too small to dissipate the heat and eventually burned the reflector. When they switched to HID's this problem was corrected, but then the bulb Lincoln used was discontinued and made out of that precious material, "unobtainum" Truthfully, although it was indeed a fine car, I could never quite get used to the stretched Taurus look. I literally traded for my Markvii because of the way the car looks. Shrugs...

I often think of getting a Mark VIII. I would enjoy having and driving one. I think the Ford-like items I had in my beloved 1995 Edie Bauer Explorer would be quite a welcome sight.

I love my VII and I am sure I would continue to appreciate it for what it is. Every time I drive my VII I get a kick out of it. Every. Time.

I think I would appreciate an VIII for what it is and not compare it to my VII.

Should a well-kept, black on black VIII LSC show up near me, I'd probably be in trouble.

All the VIII's around here on CL are pretty much junk. Thankfully.

So since typing that last line, just for grins, I got on CL and found this… http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/ctd/4335151752.html

2.6 freekin miles from my house.

I could sooooo drive that!

I gotta stay off the interwebs. :?

I thought all 97 and 98 had grills the same color as the car.

Go ahead and drive it...................

Way back when I had a 1991 Nissan 300ZX and I was at a road course for an open track day, a guy told me to drive his 300ZX around the track. The only difference being that he had upgraded shocks and sway bars. Foolishly, I drove his. Two days later I had ordered shocks and sway bars.

I think that lesson applies here.

Step... away... from... the... car... and... keep... your... hands... in... the... air!

It's the 4r70w tranny that makes the difference. I have two cars with that tranny and it outshines the AOD by miles. If they would have had the 4r70w before 88, I think this car would have really been a better driving car. The 1 and 2 gearing in the 4r70w is lower than the AOD so you get off the line faster and are moving down the road quicker. Also, the longer wheel base, bettter designed air suspension and the engine all make the difference.

I could never understand why my 95 Town Car felt faster than my Mark VII since everything else was the basically the same. It's the gearing.

I think you can apply that to your VIII as well.To bad the Mark VII wasn't a little more stylish. I really do like the 97 model the best. Maybe that will be my next car.

In my dream world I would have a car from every Mark series. As long as I'm in my dream world, I'd have a bunch of trim levels and colors in every Mark series. :P

The LSC came back in those years, and they had colored grilles.

A red 98 LSC popped up last Summer for about $3500, it was a nice one, and I was tempted.

It took 2 mark 8s to convince me to never own one again. I had a 95 and 98 LSC.
They dint stop that well. Don't handle all that great either and are just a bit faster than 7 . Front suspension geometry is troublesome, rebuilding it with after market parts will never feel like factory parts are obsolete. After one year of owning my 98 I sold it.
Interior design was the best part of that car.
7 for life. Better styling.

But with that said. Enjoy. 8 does one thing great and better than 7 and that's eating up miles. Long drives at high speeds.

I must be loosing it, but for $1000 I'd pick one up too I guess. Take it for a spin once a month and redline that motor a few times.

My best friend took a look at the Mark VIII about two years ago, and they(wife) decided to find one. She doesn't drive much anyway, but my friend likes the car for the highway cruising. He hates driving it in town, with our rough roads it bounces a lot. He doesn't like that suspension, each end upsets the other end on every bump. He does like the engine though, and the interior(although he wishes it had the steering wheel controls like my Mercury).

I'm going to build an engine next year that would put the Mark VIII DOHC to shame, quicker to rev and 200 more hp. Just a little 302 based engine, it could be described as a Boss 347. I don't need that kind of engine in my Lincoln though, so it'll be a fun thing to stick in my old Ranchero. ;)
