Welcome to the Lincoln Mark VII Club.

The Mark VII is one of the finest automobiles that Ford produced, and one of the most dependable as well. As in any automobile there are some things that could have been designed a little better. The Lincoln Mark VII Club would like to bring to your attention an issue common to the 5.0L engine, coupled to the AOD transmission on many Ford products. The part is the Throttle Valve Bushing. This small, inexpensive part, if not regularly checked and replaced can turn an otherwise perfect transmission into a $1000.00 rebuild in just a few miles. Symptoms are: sudden erratic shifting and slippage of the transmission. It is advised that if any of these symptoms occur, you stop your vehicle and check this part immediately. It takes a very short time to cause severe damage to your transmission if you continue to drive with this part defective or disconnected. Often times you can re-install the bushing & cable to limp home, or to a repair facility should it fail on the road. Again, do not operate the vehicle with this cable disconnected.

This part was used on our Mark VIIs from 1987 through 1992, all models.

Below, is an Image of the location of the Throttle Valve Bushing as seen from the front of the engine.


The above image shows the plastic (stock) version of the bushing and cable below it, in its proper position.

The following image shows the bushing and cable loose. This is what you need to avoid. Either the entire bushing can drop out of the linkage mounting hole (shown), or the cable itself can drop away from the bushing. In either case, the results are the same.


The Lincoln Mark VII Club suggests that you check and if necessary, replace this bushing whenever you do any service to the engine or upon a new purchase.

The bushing can be obtained from Ford.


They cost $5.00 or less. There is also a bronze version which can be purchased from a number of suppliers which use a horseshoe clip to retain the cable, in conjunction with the bronze bushing. These bronze bushings were purchased at: ( Part number: T96001 AOD, FIOD, ATX Throttle valve lever grommet)


The images below show both styles, properly installed.

The following OEM style can just be pressed into the linkage hole from the bottom up, with a pair of pliers or similar and the cable can likewise be snapped into the bushing from the underside using pliers.


The bronze style simply drops over the cable end pin. It is then lifted into the linkage hole from below where It is held in place with a horseshoe clip, above it.


Removal of the large rubber air intake hose is advisable and eases installation by providing visibility and working room. A high degree of technical or mechanical ability is not required to replace this part.

Again, we strongly advise that you check this small but important part upon purchase, and periodically as routine maintenance.

EOSZ-7341-B is the new Ford Part number for our THROTTLE BODY CABLE BUSHINGS or INSULATORS.
It is a general bushing with several applications on Ford/Lincoln/Mercury vehicles.
