Dew Wipes and Decal Fixes

Postby BSharp1 » Thu Aug 18, 2016 10:33 pm

I did the Home Depot weatherstrip trick on the dew wipes, came out way better that I expected. They were very cracked and looked terrible. Here is the after.

I also bought some vinyl wrap and covered the cracked decal on the beltline trim, came out nice.

Nice job, BSharp1. One thing that I've noticed is that you should remove the adhesive on these strips before gluing them. I've had them come off when I didn't clean them even though I used black super weatherstripping adhesive. Otherwise they work great. I used electronic cleaner as it doesn't seem to degrade the rubber. I forget if this was the late great Art Bailey's idea. He is still missed.

Oh, and it is critical that you have a good seal especially after you have replaced the window lift motors and door lock actuators!

very nice!

I had planned this for my dew wipes as well, though they're still in decent shape. Also had in mind taping off and spray painting those trims matte black, but the vinyl seems another good alternative.

Yes, I was curious at least on the vinyl wrap myself.

The stuff I used on the trim was ebay item #201523233901
I figured it would be too hard to try to get the old stuff off since it looks like a decal anyway. And too hard to get paint to stick to it.
I scuffed up the old stuff with a sanding pad then wiped it with a grease remover. I cut it a little long and wide and trimmed it with a razor knife . I tucked the inner edge under the original dew wipe.
If you mess up no biggie, cut another piece.

Wipe the adhesive surface off with 91% isopropyl before flying. Works well.
