A9L ECU for MAF Conversion

Postby Lincoln5oh » Sun Jul 23, 2017 10:03 pm

Is the A9L a useable ECU in a MAF conversion? I know you can't use it in an auto mustang (due to the o2 harness) but it seems like some have done it in a VII. I ask because I already have an A9l in my yards but won't start the swap until I'm sure it will work in my car. Anybody running one who could chime in would be greatly appreciated :)

Is that a manual PCM? The issue with a Mustang automatic would be the same with a Mark VII. The only difference in the operating systems really, is the fuel relay location, and a few wire pins that differ in the computer. The functions are identical though.

Found out some info on the Facebook page and it will work. Not the ideal factory tune but it's MAF. It will be tuned with a chip down the road anyways. I guess the broblem was in the MAF mustangs swapping ECUs not in converting the speed density ones. I currently have been going back and forth between the Lincoln VL1 (I think) and Mustang DA1 ecu and it has noticeably more power. Probably better matches my 2.5" cat less exhaust/headers with an explorer intake/75mm throttlebody. And that's for a 5 speed. The A9L will be going in soon. Once I fix this awful vacuum leak!

I hope that works well for you. In a few months I'll let you know how a 97 Explorer MAF and PCM work. I'll be converting my wiring system soon and using the Explorer engine/trans harness, plus the intake and front dress etc. That should run okay, just stock, the HO cam and E7 heads the only thing the computer isn't tuned for.

Are you using the a 4r70w also? I'd be excited to see that! OBD2 also?

Yes, all of it. I have a set of harnesses from a 2002 Mustang auto car. Those will be a rough match to our Fox body chassis, and an Explorer harness for the engine and dash. I'll try to include a GEM from the Explorer, as that adds power delay controls, shuts down power if you leave lights on, and the windows/radio work after shutting the car off, until you open the door. The tough thing I want to do is use an Explorer EATC in place of the Mark VII unit. If it will be workable, those are much better, huge lit buttons and newer with better repair sources.
