Probably what I've been wanting, but $10 large??

Postby IndyDave » Wed Mar 15, 2017 12:51 pm

I haven't wanted to go see it, but I want to go see it, if you know what I mean.

It's less than 2 hours from me, which is good and it's bad.

As some folks here know, a low milage black on black SE is what I have been wanting.

I get a vibe that this guy is isn't in a hurry to drop his price. The images suggest he has had it up for sale for at least before the fall of last year.

I'd say it doesn't hurt to go look at it but I know better. Maybe.

Ask the seller for the correct VIN.

The VIN in this listing, 1G2WR521X2F188226, is not a Lincoln Mark VII VIN.

Pricing a really nice Mark VII is tougher now. I was hunting for a nice red/white SE 15 years ago, and about $7500 was my limit then. Long ago you could still find almost any part in great shape with some patience. Now given the difficulty of really nice used parts, the value of a nice used car is higher if you find one. I cannot afford to spend that much on another car, I'm managing with my collection of parts from way back then.

I hope that's a keeper and it is what it's suggesting. Good luck Dave.

:? All things considered and IF as advertised, IMHO, the price is reasonable. It was probably a $30k when new and now has only 58k or so on the clock. If a black SE is your cup of tea, I doubt you will find many better. (And when you are close enough to drive and check in person and then not have a shipping expense......)

Personally, I have paid close to that much for a couple Mark VIIs and shipping cost from CA was close to $2k for one. Just sayin'. 8-)
As of July2017, 11 Mark[*] VII's, 3 licensed for the road:
1989 LSC Midnight/Current Red c/c (9G) mostly stock 99k.

1989 Light Titanium c/c (11) Bill Blass - stock. miles unk
1989 LSC Medium Sandalwood (62) Mass air+ 111k FOR SALE $900.
1986 BB (8T) stock 125k (wife'sDD)
1987 BB (4L) stock (miles unk)
1987 Base Model White (9L) 107k (2.73rear)
1984 Turbo Diesel Base model, Platinum (1Q), 131k+ FOR SALE $1000.

I like the car but, you would think the price would be reduced. $10k is really stretching it for at now in the current market but, I would say $7500-$8500 would be a better number a decent range. Otherwise, it is a very nice car.

Agreed and I'm even closer than you. It's 556 miles one way for me or a 90 minute flight.
I would need at least a call to the seller before flying out.
If the moon roof is factory, that is a plus.
Yeah ... someone in the Club should score this.

I'd figure it would have been sold by now or at the least owner would of dropped the price.

Most of us that have wanted a triple black LSC, bought them years ago when they were still 3K in this condition.

The seller is probably just not motivated enough to lower his price. In many cases, it's not a matter of "I must sell it", it's a matter of, "I want to sell it and I'll sit on it until the right buyer pays 10K for it".

I'm sure the collectors in NYC have looked at this car and said, "Nice", then walked out to their garages and hopped into their own triple black LSC and drove it for a week before putting it back in storage.

Yes. There are twins of this car still available for half the cost but they need 15K of parts and labor (yeah. LABOR does cost) to get it to this level of finish. In 2002, I paid Ford about $5200.00 to replace my carriage top (textile only) and repaint the car to Ford specs. That was for OLDSCL1. Today, the paint and the top look great but the engine ticks and the seats are worn and the door trim is cracked and the door lock solenoids are busted and the radio crackles and the antenna is busted so it's about an $800.00 car ... on a good day ... during tax season.

Do I ask $5200.00 plus $800.00 for a total of $6000.00 at auction?

Only if the auction were in Never Never Land.

I'll bet the seller get's 7500 - 10k for the car via a private sale.

That's my thoughts John. I was thinking that if the seller dropped his price to around $8500 I could see this car being sold. I wish I had the cash and space because I would probably pay $8500 for it since I'm fairly close to the car.

I can dig it.

The best purchases that I've made happened when I squirrelled away a small cache of funds until something nice showed it's head ... and then BANG!, I pulled the trigger and it was mine.

Start squirrelling :)

That is a beautiful car, for me it's just the wrong colors(I like red on white). My first SE was $9500 in 1996, with 65k miles, and nothing was wrong or worn noticeably. I was spoiled with that car, I miss that.

The market is not there for a car that's not hot in the eyes of buyers. It's a niche car, like all cars I've owned in my life. Only someone who is a big fan of the car will even think about buying it. So the pool of buyers are very tiny, and those willing to pay top dollar will only jump on one that is exactly what they want.

The red SE recently I passed on because it was up north. A few pictures don't tell the whole story of a car, it takes looking very close, all around, underneath the vehicle. The 98 Explorer Limited I bought least year most people would never think of paying good money, or over $1000 or so for this condition, mileage, faults etc. But I knew what options it had before I drove 110 miles to look at it. I was disappointed with the over all condition, fenders not fitting(prior damage in front), many features not working etc. But I spent about 5 minutes checking the basic stuff, and 15-20 looking for any corrosion, or big chassis damage. The asking price was $2500, but it was a GA car that moved to NC seven years earlier. I offered $2000 because it had zero rust. They were happy to get that, a couple with little money. But I was glad to get it, knowing that it saved me tons of stress and labor to fight rust, or to keep looking for another one. I could have offered $1500 and maybe got it for near that, but this worked for me. I have lots to do to it, tons and tons, but it has been reliable for 24k miles so far, delivering mail for a year straight.

John you are right, save money for a planned need or want, and then hunt patiently to find the right one. Jump on one when it fits the bill.

Yeah, I don't need another car. I'm stretched with things right now and putting my focus on "Cosmo". Plus, I have my '79 Cordoba that I need to work on. If I ever I get a large sum of money I'll maybe get another Mark VII like the one in this listing but, right now I'll focus on what I have.
