FORD RECALLS LINCOLN MKC - TWICE IN SAME DAY

Ford has taken the unusual step of issuing two recalls for the same luxury SUV for very different defects at the same time. Both involve the 2015 Lincoln MKC.

The first recall covers a total of 12,205 MKCs and 2014 Ford Escape crossovers in North America for a problem related to the nickel plating on the fuel pump. Ford says the pump can seize, causing the vehicle to stall while being driven. Or it just might not start. If the vehicle stalls while moving, it could cause a crash. So far, though, Ford says it's unaware of any crashes. Of those vehicles being recalled, 9,038 are believed to be in the USA.

To fix it, dealers will replace the fuel delivery module.

The second recall, also announced on the last day of 2014, is even more unusual because it involves a design, rather than mechanical, defect.

Ford wants to move the position of the start button on 13,574 2015 MKCs in North America, of which 11,144 are in the USA. The current button was deemed to be too close to other controls, leading to fears that drivers might inadvertently shut off the engine. If that happens, it will also render the SUV's airbags inoperable, according to Ford.

Ford intends to move the start button and reprogram the powertrain control module. Again, Ford says it is unaware of any crashes due to the problem.
